SISTRUM MANIFESTO
Sistrum is an experimental, serial, artist’s book and publishing platform for work that examines materiality in text. It is named after the ancient instrument; a ceremonial rattle shaken to make noise and stir up activity.
Sistrum will shake the words themselves by inviting artists to approach reading/writing in new ways through cross-disciplinary process and thought.
Rejecting the perceived values and material hierarchies of the medium, Sistrum will “print” using whatever is available and most interesting; be that a copier, printing press, or website.
Sistrum will not overlook digital strategies of dissemination, thereby advancing the artist’s book’s pioneering, radical intent to operate outside the traditional gallery structure.
Through methodologies that blur the line between text, image and sound, Sistrum will seek to better embrace the clamor, babble and static of language’s reproduction.
